Measuring "Small" Tsunami Wave Characteristics - Write Up

DATA LINKS:

How did you measure the amplitude of the Kodiak tsunami wave?

What value did you find?

LEARNING TARGET:

I will work with my group to write a first draft of my lap report during today's class.

WORDS O' THE DAY:

"Small Tsunami" Wave Characteristics:

CALENDAR:

ScreenCastify Tutorials are Due: Thursday, April 6

Lab Reports are Due: Friday, April 7

NOAA Lat/Long Distance Calculator is HERE

The OOI Data Portal is HERE. I received further communication from the Gracious & Humble folks at the OOK and the CTD sensors are LIVE (YAY!)

Kodiak data HERE

WORK O' THE DAY:

I received word from the folks up at U of W late last week that there are additional Bottom Pressure Sensors available to us-- they are labeled as CTD (Conductivity-Temperature-Depth).

═══════════════════════════

By way of practice for our upcoming Video Tutorial Project, please work with your group to find a working CTD sensor.

Then please take specific notes of the steps required to:

  1. Obtain data from the sensor
  2. Download the data to your Google Drive or your local drive (if you aren't using a chromie) and then to import the data into Google Sheets
  3. Create the graph using Google Sheets

I will give you class time to work on both the Lab Report and the Video Tutorial

How does the crest and trough of a wave relate to the amplitude of a wave?

How does the period of a wave relate to the frequency of a wave?

How can we find a more precise value for the speed of the 'small' tsunami generated by the Kodiak earthquake now that we have more data from the Southern Hydrate Ridge PREST sensor?
