Wellness Intro

I've dabbled at having my students learn relaxation techniques for the past number of years; and several years ago I had a local psychologist come in and talk to one of my classes about stress and such.

Those conversations were very well received, so a few years back (2018-2019) I reserved a small part of our week (usually 5 minutes on Mondays) to help my students learn and practice skills to help with stress management. I taught them a basic technique known as "Mindfulness" meditation and we practiced that about once a week. Students are under no obligation other than sitting quietly for 5 minutes.

In our hectic, over-organized electronics-filled world I believe 5 minutes of quiet time is most welcome.

Anyhow, that worked really well so the next year I encouraged students to ask to "Take 5" from time to time and we are doing that this year (2021-2022)

From time to time we might dabble in other topics as well:

SLEEP - There is AMAZING research being done by University of California (Berkeley) Neuroscientists that shows how sleep can MASSIVELY impact learning.

The effect of quality sleep on stress management is also well documented.

HYDRATION - Brand new research was published just this summer that shows that being even a bit dehydrated can impact learning.
EXERCISE - The positive impacts of regular exercise are well known and well documented for both mental and physical health.
TOOLS FOR DEALING WITH STRESS - We'll learn about and practice some of these
MENTAL HEALTH & STRESS - Mental health can be hard to talk about-- we'll talk about that.
