INVESTIGATIVE QUESTION:

What would you like to know about cars accelerating from a stop down at the Rosedale/Skansi intersection?

Work with your group to form an 'investigative question' to solve by taking data with a radar gun.

We always start our labs with a "PreLab" where we do the preliminary work of designing the lab (I *never* give you cookie cutter fill-in-the-blank labs... I hate 'em)

0. Open up the assignment in Schoology and grab a copy of the Physics Lab Report Template

  1. Elect/Appoint/Volunteer a PM as always!

  2. Make sure to open a copy of the example lab and make sure you spend *quality* time during your Pre-Lab. It is IMPOSSIBLE to knock this out in anything less than an hour. Work with your group to define the purpose of the lab. When your group has reached consensus, write down that purpose in your own words in your own Google Doc.

  3. Some groups often dive into the abstract early on. Don't do that since that is basically a summary of your lab... in fact, do the abstract nearly at the end (see step #9 below)

  4. Under the Measurements and Devices section please include our class radar guns: Bushnell "Velocity" Speed Gun. We take data with that device by pointing it at vehicles, hitting the trigger and reading the speed right off the device.

  5. Now please determine the Methods (procedures) you plan to use to carry out your lab (this is key-- work diligently to anticipate problems and address them BEFORE your lab begins. For example, will you measure all cars, trucks, busses and motorcycles or will you restrict your data? Will that change your purpose? This will most likely take several drafts. When your group has reached consensus, write these down in your own words in your own Google Doc Lab Report

  6. Now please design a data sheet for collecting data

  7. When your group has finished, please have the PM send me a copy of your data sheet (it should have the rows & columns CLEARLY labled {including units} and I'll send it back to your PM with "sample" (fake!) data. Please don't send me a pdf version though, since I can't edit the data there. Word/Google Docs Tables/Excel/Google Sheets will *all* work quite nicely!

  8. Over the weekend collaborate with your group to finish the Sample Calculations (actually I'll help you out here, there won't be any sample calcs because we're using radar guns) and Discussion sections (Discussion writing help is HERE)

  9. Write the abstract by yourself (How to write an abstract is HERE). Remember, always write the abstract LAST

  10. Exchange/share your report with someone else and have them review your work and make suggestions (show those in your google doc using the editing feature). Make sure they write "Reviewed by <their name> at the bottom of the last page of your lab report

  11. Turn in your finished lab report next week. It will be graded.

You SHOULD collaborate with your group members in all aspects of the lab -- including the written report. You should NOT, however, copy and paste anything from anyone else at any time for any reason. You should NOT take work from another person or other source and put your name on it... Ever.... For Any Reason.
